Common Dolphins

Updated: Jun 14, 2021

Long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis) are often seen in superpods of hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dolphins.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 60km, common dolphins often work together to herd schools of fish. They are a very sociable species, with languages and vocalisations of whistles and clicks being unique to each pod.

The biggest threat to common dolphins are anthropogenic, particularly heavy metal and plastic pollutants, while many are caught as bycatch by commercial fisheries.
